Meet the Team

James Reed

HEAD DISTILLER

Born in Palmer, Alaska, James began distilling at the age of 14. Having worked all over the USA in various capacities, particularly in the development and manufacture of stills, he was also involved in the research of spirits as an alternative fuel. Emigrating to Australia 2010, with wife Jodi and daughter Lindsey, James commenced as the The Grove’s Distiller in July 2012. He is responsible for distilling and spirit product development.

Matt Hatcher

DISTILLER

Born in West England, Matt’s honed his skills in scrumpy cider production over the years before trying his hand at brewing. The Grove are lucky enough to have Matt’s talents on board brewing our specialty boutique batch beer as well as helping James in the still house as our Assistant Distiller. He’s a lover of a beer and all things spirits with a passion for doing things a little differently. Much like the rest of us here at The Grove. Chat to Matt about producing our Corn Mash!

Carl

PRODUCTION MANAGER

Hailing from New Zealand, Carl joined the team as a Production Assistant and through passion and hard work is now our trusted Production Manager. The brains of the operation, Carl is production manager across our-site. Keeping the best produce coming in fresh and making sure our small batches are ready and hand-bottled for each seasonal release.

Our Stil — Our traditional copper stil has been imported from Germany and features a combination pot and column with a whiskey fruit head pot. Having a combination stil allows us to make a variety of spirits including whisky and bourbon

Our Process

At The Grove we take pride in making hand-crafted, artisan spirits. Our products are produced in small batch quantities and we use locally sourced products where possible, such as Southern Forests Honey in our honey bourbon...or search the globe for the finest ingredients such as our corn grain from Kentucky used to make our mash which we source from Kentucky.
Our location in the Margaret River Wine sub-region of Wilyabrup means we have the ocean on three sides of the region creating high annual rainfall. It is this rainwater that is harvested on-site and triple filtered before being added to our distillate to produce our beautiful spirits.

Nurtured in small 50 litre barrels for 2 years and 3 months it rivals Whiskies four times it’s age. Non filtered, no flavours or colour addition, allowing the full complexity of the spirit to shine through. Presented with a Certificate of Authentication each 500ml bottle is individually etched with the bottle number and distillers signature. Beautifully protected in a hand-crafted Tasmanian Oak, felt lined bespoke box, by Kangaroo Valley Woodcrafts.

Matching bottle numbers etched on the oak door front and tasting notes for this rare release conveniently displayed on the inside of the oak door create a very special collectors ensemble. The 50 litre barrels have been manufactured to the distillers specifications by an Australian Cooperage from new white American oak that aged The Grove’s American Style Spirit.

Pure Margaret River Region water

Our water is drawn straight from the source. Pure, filtered rainwater from the pristine South West coast of Western Australia is used in our spirits. We believe that the water used for distillation and blending should be free from any impurities or minerals that may alter the flavour profile in the spirits.
