Our Story
The Grove Distillery is located in Wilyabrup, in the heart of the world-class Margaret River Wine Region. The property was purchased in 1995 by Steven Hughes. Steven first started producing wine, planting 30 acres under vine.
He then diversified into spirit-based liqueurs, acquiring a traditional copper stil from Germany and establishing the first ever distillery in the Margaret River Wine Region.
Importing a traditional copper stil from Germany, Steve began making vodka, gin and spirit based liqueurs such as limoncello and nocino. James Reed, a Distiller who had recently immigrated to Australia and landed in the region soon joined the team and today The Grove are making a variety of awarded spirits.
The Grove have been successful in achieving a swag of both national and international awards for their top shelf spirits, organic absinthe and coconut rums (just to name a few), Steven and his head distiller James Reed are producing whisky. All our whisky is non-chill-filtered with no flavours or colour additives, allowing the full complexity of the spirit to shine through.
Meet The Founder
Born in Harrow, London, Steve worked in the high flying world of finance and insurance for 11 years. In a Mid-life crisis, he created The Grove Vineyard with his family in 1995 before realising his 17 years experience working as a Metro fuel distributor in Perth paved the way for another form of rocket fuel… Spirits. Today he’s a Jack-of-all-Trades, Distiller, Brewer, Entertainer, Host, and a myriad of other roles.
