At The Grove, every barrel tells a story, and the barrel that won our Peated Single Malt Whisky a Gold Medal at the 2021 Australian Distilled Spirits Awards is a wonderful yarn indeed.
Located in the Margaret River Region, The Grove Distillery is known for their wide range of premium spirits. Founder Steve Hughes and Head Distiller James Reed have been making single malt whisky’s for over a decade. Now our efforts have been rewarded with a coveted Gold Medal at the country’s first and only national awards program recognising excellence in Australian distilled spirits and liqueurs.
Beginning life as a vineyard with 25 acre under vine, an olive grove and a German made copper still on the property, The Grove Distillery is uniquely placed to experiment and innovate when producing our premium spirits range. Not satisfied with normal, our unique whisky’s are inspired by the region and the terra on which they are made.
True to our passion for experimentation, James and Steve decided to refashion two 225L American Oak and French Oak barrels that housed our delicious estate-grown shiraz port into small 50L barrels. These were then re-filled with peated whisky.
Three and a half years of ageing later and the resulting medium peated single malt whisky that James tasted out of the barrel did not disappoint. Matured in a single barrel requiring no blending, this whisky came out at 55.6% and that’s where it stayed. After testing a few different percentages, James decided that near full barrel strength was the only way to honour this unique medium peated whisky in all its full bodied flavour.
The Grove are thrilled to win this Award and have a new release of peated whisky out now for punters to try. We also won Champion Rum and Champion Vodka at the Perth Royal Food Awards 2021 earlier this year so you can be sure that a trip to The Grove will be truly golden.
