Peated Single Malt Whisky - Release 31

At The Grove, every barrel tells a story, and the barrel that won our Peated Single Malt Whisky a Gold Medal at the 2021 Australian Distilled Spirits Awards is a wonderful yarn indeed.

Located in the famed wine region of Margaret River, the first distillery here, The Grove actually started out as a vineyard. With 25 acre under vine, an olive grove and a distillery to boast on our beautiful property, The Grove Distillery is uniquely placed to experiment and innovate when producing our premium spirits range.

We’re not satisfied with normal and our whisky’s are inspired by this place. That’s why Head Distiller James Reed and Founder Steve decided to refashion a couple of 225L American Oak and French Oak barrels that housed our delicious estate-grown shiraz port into small 50L barrels.

Once the port was dumped, we then re-filled the 50 litre barrel with our peated whisky. We had a feeling we were on to something spectacular.

3.5 years of ageing later and the resulting medium peated single malt whisky that James tasted out of the barrel did not disappoint.

Matured in a single barrel, with no blending, this whisky came out of the barrel at 55.6% and that’s where it stayed. After testing a few different percentages, James decided that full barrel strength was the only way to honour this unique medium peated whisky in all its full bodied flavour.”

A unique release of a medium peated, single malt whisky, deep ruby in colour with a wood-smoke and orange aroma, this whisky doesn’t peat around the bush. The taste is of smoky peat and sweet barley malt with a warm lingering finish of those famous smoky tones and burnt caramel.

We have a deep love for craft that’s inspired by Margaret River Wine Country, there’s something special about this place. Here in the sub-region of Wilyabrup, we are bound by the ocean on three sides creating high annual rainfall, which is captured on-site and triple filtered before being distilled into our small-batch whisky.

Every barrel we use tells the story of the spirit it nurtured, a White American Oak, an Ex-Port Barrel or locally made smaller 50 Litre Barrels to enhance ageing. This difference creates a whisky that is distinctly our own. Time is on our side, producing small-batch quantities of no more than 80 bottles per release.

We hand-bottle everything before it’s sent out, winning awards both locally and nationally for what we do here. This is the spirit of the Grove, it’s bravery, it’s not being satisfied with normal, it’s making bloody good spirits while having a good time.
